INKAS – Ivins No Kill Animal Supporters
Advocate: Lois Hewitt

December is a month filled with family, friends and holiday cheer. December also brings another calendar year to an end.  As we conclude 2019 and “ring in” 2020 INKAS would like to express our thanks and graditude to:

All of our volunteers and generous donors.  Without your help both timewise and financially INKAS would not be able to carry out our mission of providing resources to assist the Ivins Animal Shelter, as well as other local non-profit, no-kill animal rescue groups.
Bailee Mabe and her team at the Ivins Animal Shelter for their dedication and hard work at the shelter and for their continued efforts in community outreach.

To all those who have given the best gift of all by rescuing and providing loving “forever homes” to animals in need.

INKAS’ wish to all is that your days in December and the year 2020 be “purr-fectly” merry and “paws-itively” bright.

Ivins Night Sky Initiative

Ivins Night Sky Initiative
Advocate: Nathan Dupre

Ivins Residents Come Together to Preserve & Improve Their Night Sky
Reprinted from the Ivins Night Sky Initiative website, 11-21-19

Ivins residents braved the rain last night to show their support for and express concerns about updating the city’s outdoor lighting ordinance and pursuing designation as a Dark Sky Community from the International Dark Sky Association (IDA).

The event, organized by the Ivins Night Sky Initiative and sponsored by Red Mountain Resort, featured a presentation by Marc Deshowitz on outdoor lighting issues.

This isn’t the first time the Initiative has done this. But last night was different. Earlier this month the Ivins City Council discussed the Initiative’s recommendations for updating the city’s outdoor lighting ordinance. Some residents expressed concerns at that meeting and the Council decided the City would not pursue designation as a Dark Sky Community from IDA.

Last night some of those residents and City Council members attended the presentation. They got to express their concerns and get clarification on issues that bothered them. That doesn’t mean they became converts. But at the end of the night they did agree that the Initiative’s mission to improve, preserve, and protect the night sky over Ivins was worthwhile enough to get together and reconsider the Initiative’s recommendations.

The mission of the Ivins Night Sky Initiative is to improve, preserve, and protect the night sky over Ivins and our heritage of dark skies through education and information about environmentally responsible outdoor lighting, and to serve as a resource for City officials, residents, and businesses.

Let us know if this Initiative is important to you, if you are willing to get involved, and what else you think we should be doing to improve, preserve, and protect the night skies in Ivins.
