Voyager Series: Crows and Ravens with Ron Smith

Voyager lecture seriesMarch 14
7:00 PM
Tickets: $10

You are constantly being observed and studied.

Your face will be remembered for years if you offer a gesture of kindness. The same applies if you act inappropriately. We’re not talking about camera surveillance. We’re talking about crows. 90% of the world’s crow population lives with 3 miles of human settlements. Even though many people don’t like crows, as well as their close relatives, ravens and magpies, these birds thrive in our cities, our farms, and in our parks. Popular lecturer Ron Smith will help us identify the differences between crows and ravens, as well as explain how these extraordinary birds rival the chimpanzee and orangutan in overall intelligence.

Social gathering begins at 6 pm with light appetizers, mingling, beverages and conversation.  Make new friends and see old ones, stretch your minds and enjoy the community that the Center for the Arts is gathering one event, lecture, story, concert and show at a time!

Lecture Series is Sponsored by Voyager Wealth Management; Cache Valley Bank and State Farm Insurance (Sherry McGhee agent).

Driving Miss Daisy with the Neil Simon Festival

Driving Miss Daisy.March 20-23 & 25
7:00 PM
Tickets: $30

Alfred Uhry’s classic Pulitzer prize winning play is a timeless, searing, funny, and ultimately hopeful meditation on race relations in America, told through the complex relationship between two of popular culture’s most enduring characters. When Daisy Werthan, a widowed, 72-year-old Jewish woman living in midcentury Atlanta, is deemed too old to drive, her son hires Hoke Colburn, an African American man, to serve as her chauffeur. What begins as a troubled and hostile pairing, soon blossoms into a profound, life-altering friendship that transcends all the societal boundaries placed between them. Their iconic tale of pride, changing times and the transformative power of friendship has warmed the hearts of millions worldwide.

Featuring the touring company cast that brought these complex characters to life at the Smith Center in Las Vegas and the Egyptian in Park City. Their chemistry is palpable, filled with humor, ire and tenderness.  Television, film and stage star Clarence Gilyard (Matlock, Walker Texas Ranger) as Hoke Colburn; Jan Broberg (Everwood, Criminal Minds) as Daisy Werthan; Rick Bugg (NSF Founder, Multiple Stage/Film roles) as Boolie Werthan.

Join Miss Daisy for a gourmet picnic dinner complete with all the Southern fixin’s, catered by Harmons’! Be sure to select Dinner and show on the drop down menu and order early, as all dinners are pre-sold! No day-of orders! Daisy needs to know how many to prepare!

KAYENTA EVENTS

2018 Parade of Homes Wrap-up.

Kayenta Homes & Properties

It was another hugely successful Saint George Parade of Homes tour.  We had a total of 18,634 people and an additional 536 reentries through our Parade Model this year with many of them remarking that this was their favorite home on the tour.  Matt Marten of Gulch Design and Jake Joines of J2 Construction have been creating our Parade Home for over the last 11 years.  Their combined skills and efforts always create a “show stopper” home that Kayenta Homes & Properties is proud to present along with our community volunteer hosts.

Our Parade home not only stands out in design and construction, but also with our volunteer community hosts.  We here at Kayenta Homes & Properties would like to give a special thanks to all that participated.  Having the community involved in the hosting process takes our home to another level and brings a sense of community pride to our home.

Thanks, Jeff, Kurt and Nancy

Kayenta’s own “Coyote Tales”

Coyote Tales

Kayenta’s own “Coyote Tales,” has become a much anticipated part of the community’s arts culture and the most recent event, held February 13 at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta, did not disappoint. Fifteen storytellers captivated the audience with lively, funny, and touching narratives based on the theme, Enchantment.

The evening was the third installment of the Coyote Tales open-mic storytelling series sponsored by the KAF. The audience was treated to a diverse and varied group of tellers who fearlessly shared some of their lives’ most meaningful events. In a charming part A / part B performance, Tim and Judy Terrell threw the gauntlet down on how a REAL LOVE STORY is told. Kristin Hunt burst forth with an exuberant telling of a mad-crush on (go figure?) Bob Costas, and Rob Goodman offered a tender take on the birth of his daughter. One of the high points was Salt Lake resident, Janet Emboy’s, wistful channeling of Giselle. While she spoke, her feet turned out into first position, her back grew straighter and her arms tooCoyote Talesk on the graceful arc of a ballerina – she was truly transformed.

Each event begins with a pre-party (to help calm the nerves and the stomachs of the soon-to-be- performers). Petite Feast provided light hors d’oeuvres and Linda and George Schmal provided the evening’s complimentary bar selections. The February 13 event had a special attraction: a gourmet concession stand staffed by cheerful volunteers, offered specialty sweets to raise money for a one-of-a-kind printmaking class for the fifth grade students at Red Mountain Elementary. Kayenta’s own Kathy Johnson has volunteered her time and talent to teach the class. The sale raised more than $500 to purchase the supplies for the class. All supplies and materials will stay with the school to be used by other students in other grades. Many thanks to all who participated.

The response to Coyote Tales has been amazing. With so many storytellers showing up, we were unable to get everyone on stage! If you would like to share your tale, please contact Victoria in advance through the Coyote Tales website www.coyotetalestories.com or through the Coyote Tales tab at kayentaarts.com. She can set you up with a story coach who can help you perfect your tale. As always, any audience member is welcome to put their name in the hat the evening of the show. However, storytellers who work with a coach are guaranteed a spot on stage. Stories presented must be true, first person narratives – we’re after on-theme stories that happened to YOU, the teller. For more information please check our website. There you’ll find tips and tricks to great story telling, information on upcoming events and, you’ll also find a selection of our favorite stories from previous events.

Our next event is scheduled for April 21st. It is a curated, competition of invited storytellers that will share their tales during a uniquely entertaining cocktail party. The theme for the evening is, ART MATTERS. It the ultimate showdown of words where audience members will vote with their wallets to choose the evening’s best story. All proceeds will benefit KAF. You won’t believe what we have in store for you!!!

KAYENTA DESERT ARBORETUM ~ Roger Head ~

Kayenta Desert Arboretum

After a winter of estivation, the Desert Arboretum at the Kayents Village is becoming alive with activity. Mark your calendar for March 22-25 for the biggest plant sate we have ever presented. Each year the Arboretum searches for plants adapted to and approved by the Kayenta Landscape Committee. We hope you will find the plants you have looked for to finish your landscaping requirements.

Great news! After a long delay while waiting for a sewer extension paralleling Kayenta Parkway, we are back on track to complete the trail between the Desert Arboretum at the Village and the Desert Rose Labyrinth. We are excited to bring this project to completion. As always we will need volunteers for the work so look for our call when the work gets underway.
