Kayenta Connection

We have so much going on now with our new Center for the Arts that you will just have to scroll down to see the scheduled events.  We do want to highlight a special community celebration on January 14th honoring the 5 individuals who helped bring the Center for the Arts from dream to reality.

Sacred Space has added a new yoga class (because there is a waiting list to attend current classes) and the Trips and Trails adventures are on the map again.

As we jump feet first into 2018 we would like to remind you that this is your newsletter. We welcome information that is pertinent to the Kayenta community including special events and life celebrations.

Happy New Year from the Kayenta Connection.

THE VOYAGER LECTURE SERIES

Evenings to inspire curiosity, discovery & wonder

Voyager: Jupiter, Saturn and Beyond
Lecture with Ron Smith

Ron Smith
Wednesday, January 10
6:00 PM
Tickets: $10

6 PM: Gathering & Art Bar
Complimentary glass of wine/beverage and assorted appetizers

Hosted by Shelly Harris / Cache Valley Bank
& Sherry McGhee / State Farm Insurance

7 PM: Presentation by Ron Smith, Professor of Astronomy, Planetarium Director

Throughout the 19th and most of the 20th centuries, planetary scientists dedicated most of their research toward Mars. Mars is relatively close. The surface of Mars can be observed though a telescope. The outer planets, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, remained shrouded in mystery. That all changed with the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft. From 1979 through 1989, they brought us fascinating views of the outer planets into our living rooms. Ron Smith, astronomer and former Griffith Observatory planetarium lecturer, will interpret the incredible findings made by the two Voyager spacecraft. You’ll see a moon with active volcanoes, a moon covered by a vast ocean, a moon with lakes of liquid methane, a cyclonic storm over twice the diameter of earth, and the exquisite beauty of Saturn’s rings. Fasten your safety belts and be part of the most incredible space journey ever made.

Save the date!  Future Voyager Lecture Series evenings: Wed. March 14 & May 16, 2018

Neil Simon’s The Dinner Party

ZNeil Simon's The Dinner Party

January 17, 18, 19 and 20
7:00 PM
Tickets: $30

The Center For The Arts at Kayenta in partnership with the Neil Simon Festival bring you, the funny and mysterious, Neil Simon’s “The Dinner Party.” Please be seated! Mr. Simon’s wildly successful Broadway hit serves up a decidedly French dinner party with hilarity and chaos that only a master chef of comedy could create. Five people are mysteriously invited to a first-rate restaurant in Paris, ooo-la-la, and suddenly find themselves in a comic soufflé. They do not know who the other guests will be or why they have been invited. Tossed together in a private dining room, they have a sneaking suspicion that this unorthodox dinner party will forever change their lives. It’s Neil Simon with an Agatha Christie twist!

Come for the laughs, stay for the mystery and enjoy the just desserts with an incredible professional cast who will not leave you hungry! Directed by Henry Ballesteros the production features film and television star, Clarence Gilyard, Utah Shakespeare Festival star, Peter Sham, NSF founder, Richard Bugg, Cedar City celebrities and leading ladies, Kirsten Sham, Holly Barrick and Alyson King.

The Spectrum and Daily News Review by Brian Passey stated: “The production of “The Dinner Party” excels as a ‘serious farce’ and as usual, Simon knows how to tug at our heartstrings and this phenomenal cast delivers his lines in a genuine and immersive way.” Don’t miss this fantastic show!

Performances run January 17-20, at 7:00 PM.  Saturday matinee at 2:00 PM. Advanced tickets may be purchased online at http://bit.ly/KayentaTix. For more information on all upcoming shows visit: www.KayentaArts.com.

DO YOU WANT TO HEAR A GREAT STORY?

Coyote Tales Storytelling

Coyote Tales

February 13
7:30 PM
Tickets: $15

Tonight I’m going to tell you about the lesson I learned when the warrant office came to arrest me…”

Coyote Tales StorytellerCoyote Tales are live, open-mic style storytelling events with amateur and experienced storytellers. Our third storytelling event for the 2017-2018 season is scheduled for February 13, 2018.  Each event has a theme, on which stories are to be based. Potential storytellers may address that theme in any way they choose. Prior to the event, storytellers craft their true, on-theme story, practice the telling (5 minutes or less), and work on eliminating excess detail to nail the perfect ending. When the doors open, potential storytellers put their name in the hat in hope of being chosen to share their story. If chosen, the storyteller takes the stage to delight the audience. Stories must be true and told live within the given time frame (5 minutes). They must be told without notes, props, or accompaniment.

The theme for this evening’s stories is Enchantment. What siren has seduced, enthralled, or enticed you? Do you have a charming Valentine’s story of courtship or romance? Get ready to tell us what fascinates or delights you. If you don’t want to get on stage, be prepared to hear some great tales AND get to know your friends and neighbors better!

For more information this event, to hear our story archives, or to get storytelling tips, visit the Coyote Tales website:
KayentaArts.com.  Please note that adult themes may be discussed. Some listeners may find a story’s subject matter difficult.

Vietnam…Through My Lens – Presidents Day Tribute, from NYC, Off Broadway

Vietnam showFebruary 16
7:00 PM
Tickets: $30

We first bring you the engaging documentary “A Soldiers Sanctuary” a film by Luke Hansen on Vietnam, the war his father Dave (Ivins, UT) served in. This remarkable film ushers in our tribute to Veterans and their families. Thursday Feb 15th. Then “Vietnam…through my lens”, written and performed by Stu Richel with photos from his tour in Vietnam. Is a soldier’s reflective journey as a combat photographer through Vietnam and beyond. Presented Off-Broadway at the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre (312 West 36th Street) in Manhattan. This critically acclaimed production is now coming to the Center for the Arts at Kayenta

This play is not a war story of blood and guts, it’s not a political statement. Vietnam…through my lens is one soldier’s intimately personal and unique tale about friendships, trust, and tenacity that travels from the jungles of South East Asia to the “jungle” of Manhattan, highlighted with photographs and video montages, most from Mr. Richel’s tour in Vietnam.

“Complemented by Richel’s own photographs of the era, his lens puts a face on the American soldier, while showcasing his skill in character acting.” – Deborah Greenhut, Playwright, Princeton Research Forum

Stu Richel has written and performed in many other solo shows; one “Mortal Decisions, a Diary of the Donner Party” (was called “a true work of sublime genius,” by the NY Observer). His other plays include “The Same Cloud” and “The Bugs Don’t Call Me Nigger” Mr. Richel has had principal roles in more than 17 feature films, and dozens of Regional, Off Broadway and other shows in New York City. Stu served from 1968 to 1970. In 1969, he was a combat correspondent with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam.
