“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time,” Staged Reading

Dog in the NightFebruary 5, 7:00 PM
Tickets: Donation

THIS IS A DONATION ONLY EVENT SUGGESTED $15 AT THE DOOR OR $5 FOR STUDENTS

The New American Drama Series is back with more staged readings of award-winning contemporary drama.

“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time”, Simon Stephen’s Tony Award-winning poetic and ultimately joyous tale of a brilliant autistic boy’s journey of self-discovery. Professional actors team up with students from the DSU Department of Theatre under the direction of Kathryn Mederos Syssoyeva for this series of staged readings, presenting cutting-edge, award-winning drama by contemporary American playwrights. Ranging from realism to the absurd, pathos to dark comedy, these plays engage some of our most urgent social concerns – the demise of industry, the vanishing middle class, race relations, social fragmentation, global warming…. Performed in an intimate theatrical setting, each reading is preceded by a presentation on the playwright, and followed by a conversation between audience, cast, and director to tease out the themes these of rich new works and draw connections to our own social and political realities.

Tickets: $15

Donations will go towards the CFTA Projection System, Suggested donation: $15-$1500!

WATCH THE FILM TRAILER HERE

Soldiers’ Sanctuary, an award winning Documentary film by Luke Hansen, takes us through a journey from the complexities of wartime in Vietnam to the hope of friendship and understanding many years later.

Luke’s father, David Hansen, a Vietnam Veteran, is one of the central characters we follow along with other Veterans on all sides of the battle for freedom and peace. This film takes us to Khe Sanh, Vietnam. The name “Khe Sanh” is known around the world as one of the fiercest battlefields of the Vietnam War. Due to its remarkable preservation and scenic location, it has come to represent everyone’s battleground.

Now, veterans and friends of all ages, from all sides of war, have joined forces to build a Peace Garden here. The Garden will occupy a large section of the old Combat Base next to an impressive war museum at the Khe Sanh Historic Site in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.

At Khe Sanh, visitors can experience both the dramatic history of bitter warfare as well as today’s brighter reality of friendship and reconciliation. Here, at this special place, visitors can feel the return to peace that brings us full circle from a darker past.

The plan to establish a peace garden on the site of the former combat base at Khe Sanh uplifts my spirit, re-energizes my soul, and makes me believe more strongly than ever in the brotherhood and sisterhood of the world.” ~ Dennis Mannion, Marine, Khe Sanh siege 1968

The Khe Sanh Peace Garden is revolutionizing the healing process for veterans of multiple generations. It gives me an opportunity to serve in the veteran community, learn from those who came before me, and gives me a great hope that one day my generation can return to Iraq.” ~ Colby Williamson, Marine, Fallujah Iraq siege 2004

Please join us for this very FIRST FILM NIGHT in the Lorraine Boccardo Theatre! Your generous donations will help us finish paying for the wonderful Projection System and Movie Screen!

Vietnam…Through My Lens – Presidents Day Tribute, from NYC, Off Broadway

Vietnam showFebruary 16
7:00 PM
Tickets: $30

We first bring you the engaging documentary “A Soldiers Sanctuary” a film by Luke Hansen on Vietnam, the war his father Dave (Ivins, UT) served in. This remarkable film ushers in our tribute to Veterans and their families. Thursday Feb 15th. Then “Vietnam…through my lens”, written and performed by Stu Richel with photos from his tour in Vietnam. Is a soldier’s reflective journey as a combat photographer through Vietnam and beyond. Presented Off-Broadway at the Dorothy Strelsin Theatre (312 West 36th Street) in Manhattan. This critically acclaimed production is now coming to the Center for the Arts at Kayenta

This play is not a war story of blood and guts, it’s not a political statement. Vietnam…through my lens is one soldier’s intimately personal and unique tale about friendships, trust, and tenacity that travels from the jungles of South East Asia to the “jungle” of Manhattan, highlighted with photographs and video montages, most from Mr. Richel’s tour in Vietnam.

“Complemented by Richel’s own photographs of the era, his lens puts a face on the American soldier, while showcasing his skill in character acting.” – Deborah Greenhut, Playwright, Princeton Research Forum

Stu Richel has written and performed in many other solo shows; one “Mortal Decisions, a Diary of the Donner Party” (was called “a true work of sublime genius,” by the NY Observer). His other plays include “The Same Cloud” and “The Bugs Don’t Call Me Nigger” Mr. Richel has had principal roles in more than 17 feature films, and dozens of Regional, Off Broadway and other shows in New York City. Stu served from 1968 to 1970. In 1969, he was a combat correspondent with the 1st Infantry Division in Vietnam.

AROUND KAYENTA

Ivins City

Santa Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue
Serving the Citizens of Santa Clara and Ivins, Utah
Charles Peterson, Deputy Fire Chief

Reprinted from the January 2018 Ivins City News

On January 1, 2018, Santa Clara Fire Department and Ivins City Fire & Rescue will become one fire department. The new department will serve both the cities of Ivins and Santa Clara. Both fire de-partments have been training together and responding to each other’s fire and medical calls for the past year. The new Santa Clara-Ivins Fire Chief, Dan Nel-son, reports the two fire departments have been training and working together well. We have been able to provide faster emergency responses with more firefighters and EMTs with the two agencies working together. We have more volunteer firemen available during the day when most people have regular jobs.

We simply are stronger together. Also, with this arrangement, Ivins and Santa Clara have been able to combine their funding to support the new fire department.
The Santa Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue merger follows a similar merger of the Santa Clara and Ivins Police Departments five years ago. The police department merger has been very successful hiring new staff and placing more officers in the field. The Santa Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue Department plans to build on the success of the police merger. Both Santa Clara and Ivins are growing, adding new subdivi-sions, and new commercial structures at a fast pace. Both cities agree these allianc-es are an efficient and logical way to meet the needs of our growing communities.

The average Ivins and Santa Clara citizen will see minimal change in their fire department and ambulance service. The same fire trucks and ambulances with the same firefighters and EMTs will be responding to their emergency calls. The San-ta Clara-Ivins Fire & Rescue Department offices are located in the Ivins Main Fire Station at 90 W Center with open business hours of Monday through Friday unless they are on an emergency callout. The department can be reached at 435-674-1083. Visitors are always welcome to stop by, especially those under eight years of age.
