As winter snow is behind us we look forward to a renewed interest in outdoor activities. Drivers need to heed speed limits and keep a watchful eye out for the increase in walkers, runners and cyclists on our Kayenta streets. On March 4th, Unity Park will be the finish line for the multiple Red Mountain Marathon runs. The running enthusiasts will be tackling 50K, 30K and half-marathon distances. Traffic will be congested around the park on Saturday so plan your driving schedule to accommodate all the runners.
Issue highlights include information on classical concerts, professionally cooked dinner events, Kayenta’s new electric car charging stations, and a great Staying Put in Kayenta seminar about “Brain Fitness.” Enjoy! Quick links to our featured sections are below.

Kayenta’s Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
We are very pleased to announce that the three electric vehicle charging stations are finally up-and-running in the lower parking lot at the Kayenta Art Village. Two chargers have plugs for Teslas, and the third works with all other EVs. If you have friends, relatives, co-workers who drive plug-ins, please let them know that there are now reserved spaces for them to charge there.
We want to PROFUSELY THANK the 21 people who generously donated to help fund the project. Hopefully those charging stations will encourage visitors to reduce the number of polluting tailpipes that they bring into Kayenta.
2017 Parade of Homes Wrap-up
It was another hugely successful Saint George Parade of Homes tour. We had a total of 16,540 people through our Parade Model this year with many of them remarking that this was their favorite home on the tour. Matt Marten of Gulch Design and Jake Joines of J2 Construction have been creating our Parade Home for over the last 10 years. Their combined skills and efforts always create a “show stopper” home that Kayenta Homes & Properties is proud to present along with our community volunteer hosts.
Our Parade home not only stands out in design and construction, but also with our volunteer community hosts. We here at Kayenta Homes & Properties would like to give a special thanks to all that participated. Having the community involved in the hosting process takes our home to another level and brings a sense of community pride to our home.
Thanks, Jeff, Kurt and Nancy

STAYING PUT IN KAYENTA
March 15, 2017
“The Connection Between Brain Fitness and Speech Pathology”
On Wednesday, March 15 at 10:30 am in the Room for Thought (next to the new auditorium) Staying Put in Kayenta along with the Live Well Center will present speech pathologist, Sidena Bitton’s talk on The Connection Between Brain Fitness and Speech Pathology.
Dixie Regional’s speech pathologist, Sidena Bitton, MS-CCC-SLP, has had a long and productive love affair with the brain during her 30 year career.
When the brain has been injured, either by stroke, dementia or a traumatic blow to the head, a speech pathologist is most likely involved in the neuro-rehabilitation process. There are physical therapists who re-connect the brain to the muscles that control movement, but it is the work of the speech pathologist who endeavors to sharpen the brain’s skills — word recognition, spatial relationships, deductive thinking, executive function and many more subtleties of the delicate neural paths that make up a fully functioning individual.
The brain has been studied since Egyptian times (1,600 – 1,700 BC) and it took 1,200 more years before Hippocrates and Aristotle decided that intelligence was located in the brain – Plato thought intelligence resided in the heart! With the intersection of technology and genetics, brain research has entered a golden age. The 21st century is considered the Century of the Brain.
Don’t miss this opportunity to understand how the brain functions, how to keep it healthy and what its connection to speech pathology really means.
Cost will be $2.00 to cover the cost of the room.
Staying Put in Kayenta is a member-driven organization for Kayenta residents, proactively providing programs and services so members can lead vibrant, active and healthy lives while living in their own homes.

FIAS – FRIENDS OF IVINS ANIMAL SHELTERS ~ Kathy Nied ~
THE PET CORNER MARCH 2017
Linda Elwell, President Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter
Greetings from FIAS
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Best Friends for the fantastic workshop they provided for area groups on February 4th. FIAS was pleased to assist with the workshop and we appreciate the support of Santa Clara Administration for their assistance. Best Friends has always been our “best friend” and we could not do what we do without their support.
FIAS is excited to announce we have a new Board member. Sandi Jensen has accepted the position of Treasurer and we are excited to have her on the Board. Sandi has been volunteering for several months with us and just recently accepted the position of Treasurer.
Our “Wish for the Month” is Purina Kitten & Puppy Chow, Purina Cat Chow and scoopable litter. We are preparing for spring and the unwanted puppies and kittens. It is sad to see all of the unwanted pets just abandoned. Spring is always a time when foster homes are really needed. If you would like to foster for the Ivins Animal Shelter & Adoption Center please use the contact information below for more information. Together we can “SAVE THEM ALL”.
If you would like to donate food or litter to the shelter please remember you can help in two ways and never leave your home. When you purchase pet supplies from AmazonSmile a financial donation will be made to FIAS along with the pet supplies you have delivered to the shelter. FIAS receives a quarterly check from AmazonSmile. The donation is made by Amazon at no additional cost to you.
Things are going very well at the shelter. It is exciting to see our numbers down and hopefully that will continue. If you are having problems with your pet(s) or need assistance with food, please contact FIAS. Our goal is not only to assist with homeless pets but we are willing to assist residents with questions or problems facing their pets.
Unfortunately we had to cancel our vaccination clinic due to lack of interest. Please be sure to keep current on your pets vaccinations. Due to continued increased price of our spay/neuter clinic we do not have appointments available at this time. FIAS is currently working to find a way to provide low cost spay/neuter for our residents. We will keep you posted on information as it becomes available.
Please continue to be cautious with your pets. One day the weather is beautiful and the next it is extremely cold. Pets must be protected from the heat as well as the cold. In our area we have a very narrow window of time when pets can be left in cars or outdoors for a long period of time
FIAS is looking at a couple of different ideas for a fundraiser, which will include the much loved auction. It may have to be a little later in the year but we will keep you posted. We have missed seeing our donors and enjoying their company. Unfortunately, the Board has been hit with family illness and deaths so it has been impossible for us to plan an event. We are looking forward to seeing all of you this year. It is hard to believe this is the March newsletter already.
PETS OF THE MONTH
Huck is a handsome boy. He is 5 years old and weighs 45 pounds. Huck’s owner had to release him and he is sad. Being a Heeler Lab mix, Huck is the perfect addition for an active family who love the outdoors. Sometimes the older dogs in the shelter get overlooked so Huck is counting on you to rescue him as soon as possible. He wants to find a forever home and a forever family.
Frankie is a handsome Gray Tabby. He is a medium size cat with long hair. Frankie is a good boy and would make a great addition to any family. He is neutered and current on all of his vaccinations. Frankie is very anxious to find his new forever home as soon as possible. Please let Frankie Bring Joy to Your World during this beautiful holiday season.
Attention: Friends of Ivins Animal Shelter is participating in the nationwide Best Friends “Give Love” Adoption Promotion. All adoption fees are reduced to $14 February 1st through 14th. Don’t miss this great opportunity to rescue a homeless pet and get a new BFF for Valentine Day.
Adoption Fee: The adoption fee at the Ivins Animal Shelter and Adoption Center is $50 for dogs and $25 for cats. However, special reduced fees are featured throughout the year. Please call the shelter for more information
