Sweat by Lynn Nottage – A Staged Reading with the DSU Theater Department

Tuesday, December 5
7:00-8:30 PM
Tickets: $15

Sweat is an Academy Award nominated and Pulitzer Prize winning drama by Lynn Nottage. The play portrays a meeting between a parole officer and two ex-convicts, and three women who were childhood friends working in the same factory. The action takes place in a fictional bar. Nottage shows how events take individuals on divergent pathways with the backdrop of job cuts, poverty and downsizing looming, although only the barman realizes what is truly at stake.

‘Us. Here. Now. The New American Drama Series’ is a joint project with Kayenta Arts Foundation and Dixie State University’s Department of Theatre. Professional Actors collaborate with Students in a series of staged readings. Presenting cutting-edge, award-winning drama by contemporary American Playwrights. Ranging from realism to the absurd, pathos to dark comedy, these plays engage some of our most urgent social concerns — the demise of industry, the vanishing middle class, race relations, social fragmentation, global warming to name a few.

Each reading is preceded by a brief presentation on the playwright and the play. The presentation is followed by a conversation between audience, cast, and professor Kathryn Syssoyeva, about the themes of these rich new works, and their relevance to our own social and political realities.

This is a “by donation” event. Suggested donation amount is $15.

Ivins no-kill animal supporters

As we celebrate the holidays INKAS (Ivins No Kill Animal Supporters) would like to express our deep gratitude to all of those who adopted a new family member from the Ivins No Kill Animal Shelter! And to all those who have made charitable contributions and /or donated their time to INKAS we thank you.

In keeping with the holiday spirit INKAS is hopeful there are families who would open their homes and hearts to the shelter’s long term feline residents. Although these cats are past their “kitten stage” they have so much to offer as loving and entertaining adults. These beautiful cats are waiting patiently for their forever homes. Please stop by the shelter at 474 N 200 W in Ivins. call to inquire: 435-628-1049 or go on Pet Finder for available pets.

From the desk of Officer Christy Taylor: Everyone here at the Ivins Animal Shelter want to wish you a happy holiday and a great new year! Our pets of the month are China and Felix. China is a 2 year old, she is a beautiful long haired torti who loves being petted, she even rolls over to have her belly rubbed! Our other pet of the month is Felix. He is 3 years old and is more shy in nature but very sweet. Felix would make a great lap cat. These two, among the rest of our great adoptable pets would love nothing more than to go home for Christmas. What a better way than to start the new year off by bringing home a new family member! Our adoption fees are as follows. Keep in mind this includes vaccines, spay/neuter and microchipping for dogs.
Dogs $40
Cats and Kittens $20

Coyote awareness. Recently we have had many calls regarding coyotes. While the sight of these animals can be very intimidating they are a part of our natural habitat and beautiful community. Coyotes are mostly nocturnal but can be spotted during the day. Coyotes are fearful of people in general. We suggest bringing in your pets at night. Cats and small dogs are easy prey for these critters and encourage them to come back. Please take this opportunity to educate our kids in case they encounter one. We have included a link at the bottom that gives you a little more information on coyotes.
We have also had inquiries on a low-cost program for fixing pets. Right now PAWS is offering a low cost spay and neutering program. You can reach them at 435-688-9748.
