Kayenta Connection June 2019

Kayenta Connection June 2019

The Kayenta Connection is underwritten by Kayenta Homes & Properties
for the benefit of the Kayenta Community.

We are saying goodbye to Kurt VanLeeuwen and welcoming Steve McAllister, Realtor to the Kayenta Homes & Properties team!

Kayenta Homes & Properties

Kurt VanLeeuwen has been a valuable sales agent to Kayenta Homes & Properties and an asset to our community for over five and a half years.  He will be retiring the end of this June and is looking forward to enjoying his life and home here in Kayenta.

Kurt will be greatly missed in our office. He’s been such a great addition to our team with his knowledge of Kayenta, the desert and its occupants and his ability to explain the Kayenta experience to future clients in a way that they can understand and feel comfortable moving forward with their sale or purchase.

In addition to Kurt’s retirement we would also like to announce the addition of our newest sales agent, Steve McAllister who will be starting in our office on June 1st.  Steve was raised in Albuquerque and graduated from BYU with his Masters in Accounting.  In addition to holding an Utah real estate license, he’s also a Texas CPA and worked for more than 25 years with the global firm of PwC in the firm’s Dallas, Caracas, London and Prague offices.  His parents are originally from southern Utah, and Steve’s always had an affinity for the red rocks and national parks of the region.  When he discovered the Kayenta community in 2017, he knew that he had found his next home.

Purchasing his lot, designing a custom home, selecting a builder, supervising construction and moving into his dream home in 2019 inspired Steve to join our team, where he couples his passion for Kayenta with his commitment to client service.

Please feel free to stop into our office to welcome Steve and to say goodbye to Kurt during this month.

A Note From Our Director

The annual KAF Gala was a great success. We so appreciate everyone for their memberships, the artists who contributed amazing art for the auction, the performances, the contributors on every level of simply EVERYTHING! The KAF Board Members and Center Staff thank all who played a part. We were so happy to honor Ned & Mary Cordery (left) with the Volunteer Ovation Award and  Judy and Tim Terrell right) with the Standing Ovation Award.

Here’s a question: Do venues matter?
It turns out, smaller venues— though rarely as glorified—can have as much impact, or as we keep hearing from our dedicated patrons, even more impact––when it comes to live theater! It is especially wonderful to be up close when the stories are intriguing, the actors outstanding, and the production values fantastic!  To actually see an actor sweat or cry, to be pulled into a belly laugh or sing along with the music, to enjoy the action and emotion at the edge of your seat–– is exhilarating! If you missed the last few plays–I am sorry, they were everything I just mentioned, filled with many memorable moments.
We need your attendance more than ever during these next three months.  Please, if you can, buy a package of tickets for the summer shows. There are four plays and two musicals coming, $130 for all six! Decide to see live theater––give tickets to someone new or bring over visiting friends––be our ambassadors! We need to sell about 500 seats per show to break even! We can do it with your help! Every performance in our small venue will become a larger-than-life experience.

James and the Giant Peach (June 27-29) is the first musical in the summer season. This deeply moving story, filled with beautiful music, is not to be missed.  Our first musical theater workshop students will also participate alongside the professional actors.
When the house lights dim and the spotlight illuminates the performers, time stands still. This grand, small theatre makes these “moments” possible.

See you soon––inside the air-conditioned theatre this summer!  Jan B.

Ivins no-kill animal supporters
Please join INKAS in celebrating Pet Appreciation Week, June 2 – 8.

For most pet owners showing appreciation for our companion animals is a daily event. However life can get hectic with work, family and other obligations. When this happens it is often our pets who are most affected by not getting the attention they deserve. There are many ways to show appreciation to our pets, not just this week but throughout the entire year.

  • Give your pet a gift. Bringing something new into your pet’s environment will break the routine and provide new interests and enthusiasm. A new toy will inspire some playful activity and a different type of treat will surely tickle your pet’s appetite.
  • Exercise and activity are always important. This week why not try out a new route for walking your dog or a ball for your cat to chase. Activity is great for fighting boredom and keeping our pets fit.
  • Mental stimulation is also important to help pets fight boredom and anxiety. Teaching a new command or trick will engage your pet. Positive reinforcement keeps it fun for both you and your pet.
  • Make sure your pet’s identification tag and microchip are up-to- date to help ensure their quick return should they become lost.
  • Is your pet due for a wellness check by the veterinarian? Are all recommended vaccinations up-to-date? This week would be a great time to make an appointment.

The unconditional love of our pets brings so much joy to our lives. We hope these ideas will help you add joy and well-being to theirs.

Glare from bright, unshielded lights actually decreases safety

Ivins Night Sky

See how glare in the photo on the left makes it hard to see the man at the gate? Glare creates deep shadows, making it more difficult to see. It also shines into your eyes, constricting your pupils. This diminishes your eyes’ ability to adapt to low-light conditions. Plus, glare from bright, unshielded lights might be unintentionally intruding on the privacy of your neighbors. Shielding that light and aiming it only where it is needed, and only when it is needed with the help of timers or motion sensors, not only increases safety but makes for happy neighbors.

Ivins Night Sky Initiative is a 100% volunteer, not for profit, citizen organization created to improve, preserve and protect the night sky over Ivins. For the most up to date information please visit our website at: https://ivinsnightsky.org/

Construction Update Tom Jorgensen – Assist. Public Works Director of Administration

Fire Lake Park: The park is open with many improvements complete. Some of the recently completed items include a boundary wall, picnic pads, and some other minor improvements. Items yet to be completed include landscaping and permanent bathrooms. Construction on the bathrooms began in March with an anticipated completion date in early May. Landscaping is anticipated to be installed this spring.

Ivins Debris Basins 1-6: The debris basins located along the base of the Red Mountain are currently not meeting the NRCS and Utah Dam Safety regulations and current engineering standards for a high hazard class dam. Construction began early January and will likely go through till the end of May (due to some weather delays). The project will represent very little disruption unless you have a home immediately adjacent to the dams or if you frequently walk on the Toe Trail. Understand that the trails will be closed the duration of the project.

Water Wisdom: Help Ivins City reach its goal to reduce water use by 10% over the next 10 years. Outdoor Tip: Don’t water more than twice per week in May unless it gets really hot. Avoid watering between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. Indoor Tip: Take short showers instead of baths. This is important to our future! For more tips go to: www.Slowtheflow.org
