A Note from our Director

Attention, people with a passion for high-caliber performances! Simon Fest presents three comedies July 31–Aug 18 at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta. Get your fill of high-brow comedy during the first annual “Simon Fest at Kayenta!” All 3 shows for $75. If you are a donor/member call the box office (435-674-2787) for a special 3-show package price. Become a member and help us meet our summer matching campaign. Every dollar will be matched up to $24,000 for a total of $48,000. We so appreciate your membership and patronage at the Center for the Arts at Kayenta. We can’t do it without you!!

Our region has no shortage of talented people and exceptional venues for people who thirst for great theatre. Cedar City’s Simon Fest Theatre Co. unfailingly delivers premium-quality productions, and this month, audiences will be treated to three comedies starring some of the finest actors in our region. We start the adventure with “Barefoot in the Park” a play that stands the test of time; it has universal appeal because it’s a funny, moving story that tells why love is the power we want to rule and rock the world!” Directed by Clarence Gilyard, Emmy-nominated star of “Walker:Texas Ranger,” the play tells the story of Paul, a conservative young lawyer, who marries the vivacious Corie. Their passionate relationship descends into comical discord in a five-story New York City walk-up.

“I Hate Hamlet” comes the second week of August!  This witty Broadway parody pokes fun at Shakespeare himself. Set in John Barrymore’s old apartment in New York City, the author’s real-life home at the time, the play follows successful TV star Andrew Rally as he struggles with taking on the dream role of Hamlet while dealing with a girlfriend who is keeping a firm grip on her chastity and playing host to the ghost of John Barrymore, who, clothed as Hamlet, has come back to earth for the sole purpose of convincing Rally to play the part. This is funny. Don’t miss it.

Finally the third installment in the August run of dark comedy brings down the house in “Little Shop of Horrors.” This delectable sci-fi horror musical comes alive with an electrifying 1960s pop/rock score by legendary composers Alan Menken and Howard Ashman. Seymour Krelborn is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush at the shop. Little does he know that this strange plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a potty mouth and an unquenchable thirst for human blood.

See you at the first annual Simon Fest at Kayenta! Jan B.

Barefoot in the Park • THIS WEEKEND

kayenta Center for the Arts
July 31–Aug 4
Tickets: $25

Presented by the Kayenta Company

Neil Simon’s family comedy is a favorite for all ages who love love. Newlyweds Corrie and Paul Bratter live in an apartment on the top floor of a brownstone in New York City. Corrie is optimistic about their future together, while Paul, the more anxious and grounded half of the couple, worries about the various flaws in the apartment, such as a hole in the skylight, their leaky closet, and the lack of a bathtub. Shortly after moving in, Corrie attempts to set her mother up with their eccentric neighbor Mr. Velasco. During the course of four days, the couple learns to live together while facing the usual daily ups-and-downs. Corrie wants Paul to become more easygoing: for example, to run “barefoot in the park”.

I Hate Hamlet

Kayenta Center for the ArtsAugust 7–11
Tickets: $30

Simonfest Theatre Co. at Kayenta

This hilarious Broadway parody pokes fun at the Bard himself. Set in John Barrymore’s old apartment in New York City—the author’s real-life home at the time—the play follows successful television actor Andrew Rally as he struggles with taking on the dream role of Hamlet, while dealing with a girlfriend who is keeping a firm grip on her chastity, and playing host to the ghost of John Barrymore, who, clothed as Hamlet, has come back to earth for the sole purpose of convincing Rally to play the part. Real estate agent Felicia Dantine convinces Rally to stay in the apartment and hold a seance.

Barrymore proves to be very convincing (challenging Andrew to a sword fight in the middle of the New York loft), and Andrew decides to play Hamlet. But when a Hollywood friend shows up offering Andrew a new role in a TV pilot with a potentially large salary and fame, Andrew is forced to choose between Shakespeare, whom his girlfriend loves, or television, where he is loved by millions.

Little Shop of Horrors

Kayenta Center for the Arts
August 14–18
Tickets $30

Simonfest Theatre Co. at Kayenta

Little Shop of Horrors is a delectable sci-fi horror musical with an electrifying 1960s pop/rock score by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

Seymour Krelborn is a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey II” after his crush at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a potty mouth, and an unquenchable thirst for human blood.

As Audrey II grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues providing a fresh supply of blood. Just when it’s too late, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s extraterrestrial origins and his true drive for world domination.

Tuacahn: Miracle in Padre Canyon

Center for Arts at Kayenta
August 20
Tickets $15

Experience what the original visionaries saw in the untouched beauty of Southern Utah’s Padre Canyon. Tuacahn: Miracle in Padre Canyon, combines the creative energy of a Broadway musical with the history of this magical place. Two years ago, the DOCUTAH International Documentary Film Festival launched its Festival with “Tuacahn: Miracle in Padre Canyon.” The film—which was produced through the generosity of Dave and Nanette Pugsley and the hard work of Dixie State University film students—will screen at 7:30pm on Tuesday, August 20. Come one hour early for refreshments and a social gathering with some of the people who made the film happen.

This is a tale of two productions. One is the history of the canyon and the vision that gave rise to an amphitheatre as a venue for professional, world-class family entertainment: The other is the story of how a complicated Broadway show is developed, mounted, and configured to utilize and adapt to the natural wonder of Padre Canyon.
